The crisis in which European Jews found themselves as a result of the Nazi policy upset traditional life, including the pattern of relations between young and old. Whereas, normally older adults held the leadership roles within the public sector, the community and family unit, during the Holocaust this role was reversed, for younger people found it easier to cope with the transient circumstances. Young people were sometimes forced to take responsibility for their families and other members of their communities. Young people managed to cope with the hardships of the ghetto and even the concentration camps, better than adults, due to their physical strength, adaptability and lack of family obligations.
