Hitler
revealed his political goals in a speech to the leading army and
navy commanders. He spoke of the need for an authoritarian state
purged of Marxism and pacifism, the occupation of living space in
the East for the German people, rearmament, and resistance to the
Versailles Treaty. He stressed the importance of the military and
promised not to involve it in domestic political disputes.
Hitler’s purpose in making these remarks was to earn the
generals’ support for his regime.
