The main
reason for the elections on March 5, 1933, was Hitler’s aim to
strengthen his grip and attain total Nazi Party control of Germany.
Hitler brought about the new elections after he was appointed
Chancellor on January 31. Despite their aggressive propaganda and
the climate of terrorism that they fomented as election day
approached, the Nazis came away with only 44 percent of the vote.
Although this represented an 11-percentage-point increase relative
to the previous elections in November 1932, Hitler still had to form
a coalition government. |
