Admiral
Miklos Horthy, the Hungarian Regent, ordered a halt to the
deportation of Hungarian Jews to the extermination camps in the
East. Nevertheless, for the next two days, the deportation teams
continued working, eradicating Jewish communities in western Hungary
near Budapest. Between May 15 and the cessation of deportations on
July 9, 437,351 Jews had been taken to the death camps. All of
Hungary was Judenrein except for the capital, Budapest.
