May 11: Allied Forces Mount Major Offensive in Central Italy

The Allies began a large offensive in Italy. First, the 50th American Army and the British Eighth Army breached the Gustav Line. The campaign began after sunset with heavy artillery shelling and aerial bombardment in preparation for a ground operation. The next day, Allied forces again advanced along a wide front. The German army resisted fiercely and then staged a gradual and organized retreat. The Allied forces neutralized the Gustav Line on May 16.
