Wilhelm II of Germany abdicated the imperial throne and fled to
Holland. Governance in Germany went over to the socialist leader,
Friedrich Ebert, who established a provisional government. A
liberal-socialist coalition won the elections for the National
Assembly on January 19, 1919, and the constitution of the new
democratic republic was proclaimed in Weimar on September 19.
