On March
16, 1935, pursuant to his efforts to reverse provisions of the
Versailles accords that were adverse to Germany, Hitler ordered the
enactment of a conscription law. The Versailles treaty allowed
Germany to have no more than 100,000 men under arms; the new statute
promised to multiply this figure many times over. Thus, Germany
abrogated another provision of the agreements that had aimed to
contain her. |
