As Yad Vashem’s Jubilee Year draws to a close, its redevelopment plan also nears completion. The new Museum—opened in March—continues to attract an unprecedented number of visitors (see The New Museum: Thousands of Visitors a Day), while in May, the Exhibitions Pavilion opened its doors, with a display of the finest contemporary art on the Holocaust (see “Etched Voices”). The new Synagogue, inaugurated in June, bears witness to the rich spiritual world of prewar European Jewry; its function as a place of worship and commemoration is testament to the indestructible Jewish faith (see Inauguration of the New Synagogue). The 60th anniversary of the end of WWII was especially poignant for the thousands of Holocaust survivors and their families who gathered at Yad Vashem on 8 May. Emotional commemorations, candid discussions, moving reunions and strong feelings of solidarity and affection permeated the atmosphere (see Generation to Generation). Yad Vashem, for its part, continues to search for effective ways to educate about the Shoah (see Focusing on Europe), to remember and mourn its victims, and to keep its message relevant across the generational and cultural divide. |
