Editors’ Remarks

It is hard to believe 50 years have passed since the establishment of Yad Vashem: hard for the survivors who remember the Shoah daily, and hard for the next generations to whom those terrible events are a world away.

Yad Vashem opened its Jubilee Year by accentuating both past achievements and future challenges (see Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future). With antisemitism gaining momentum worldwide, it is imperative we redouble our efforts in Holocaust education, spreading the message of tolerance and respect (see Combating Antisemitism: Education). The Council of Europe’s forum at Yad Vashem on educating to prevent crimes against humanity is a small but significant step in this direction (see Teaching Remembrance ). At the same time, we continue to work towards providing worldwide access to the central database of Shoah victims’ names (see Advancing Towards Online Access) in order to remember and memorialize every victim of the Holocaust.
