About the Activity
This classroom activity explores the transformation of Bergen Belsen from concentration camp to Displaced Persons' camp. It focuses particularly on how the survivor population at Bergen Belsen gave order to their chaotic world, and fought loneliness and despair, by getting married and starting families very shortly after the Holocaust.
This year we commemorate 60 years since the liberation of the Nazi camps. Our focus this Yom Hashoah is, therefore, on the anguish of liberation and the return to life after the Holocaust. In this classroom activity, we present destruction and rebirth at Bergen Belsen. Through the lens of Bergen Belsen, we aim to show how Holocaust survivors displayed courage and determination, in generating life after the Holocaust.
This classroom activity is geared for high school students (Grades 9 - 12).
