Historical Background:
On the morning of 27 January, 1945, the Soviet Army entered
Auschwitz III, followed by Birkenau and Auschwitz I later that
afternoon. Altogether, they liberated some 7650 prisoners. During
WWII, the Nazis murdered over one million Jews in the Auschwitz
concentration and extermination camps.

Educational Activities:
In Croatia, 27 January is officially titled “Day of Remembrance of
the Holocaust and for the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity.''
The Ministry of Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and
the Ministry of Culture, the
Institute for Educational Development, the State Administration
Offices in the Counties, schools and other educational
establishments are responsible for implementing the activities on
this day.
The guidelines for the implementation of the Day of Remembrance of
the Holocaust and for the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity were
designed by the Institute for Educational Development together with
the Public Institution of the Jasenovac Memorial Area, the Jewish
Community in Zagreb as well as other appropriate institutions and
bodies. These organizations bear a cross-curricular approach and
work together in cooperation with schools, local communities,
nongovernmental organizations and the media.
