Day of Remembrance:
27 January
Historical Background:
On the morning of 27 January, 1945, the Soviet Army entered
Auschwitz III, followed by Birkenau and Auschwitz I later that
afternoon. Altogether, they liberated some 7650 prisoners. The Nazis
murdered over one million Jews in the Auschwitz concentration and
extermination camps.

Memorial Day:
Holocaust Memorial Day in Denmark is called the Auschwitz-Day.

In the weeks leading up to January 27, nearly one thousand high
school students will take part in workshops at Universities all over
the country.
In Elsinore the commemoration will begin on
January 26th with the opening of the exhibition "Anne Frank and our
time" by the Mayor of Helsingoer, Mr. Per Taersboel and the former
Chief Rabbi of Denmark, Bent Melchior. In Copenhagen and in five
other cities ceremonies will be held on January 27th - and in
Copenhagen the Municipality and the Jewish Community also will
organize Workshops on Sunday, August 28th.
