27 January
Historical Background:
On the morning of 27 January, 1945, the Soviet Army entered
Auschwitz III, followed by Birkenau and Auschwitz I later that
afternoon. Altogether, they liberated some 7650 prisoners. The Nazis
murdered over one million Jews in the Auschwitz concentration and
extermination camps.

Educational Activities:
To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, the Jewish Museum of Greece will
hold a temporary exhibition (28 January – 25 February 2007) ”The
Holocaust of the Greek Jews, 1941 - ‘44”, with seven new panels with
personal testimonies. Special educational programs and activities
will also be offered to schools and to the general public. A special
section on Holocaust Education and activities, including the events
on Holocaust Memorial Day can be found on

In June 2007 the opening of the art photography exhibition by Franka
Hornschemeyer entitled “Peenemunde”, which contains photos of the
Nazi installations on the island used for rocket research, where
many inmates lost their lives in forced labour.

“Teaching about the Holocaust in Greece” took place in Athens.
