Historical Background:
On 16 April 1944, the first Jewish ghetto was established in
Hungary, in the town of Munkaćs (in eastern Hungary). Half a million
Hungarian Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.

Educational Activities:
As in all commemorating countries, activities include commemoration
of the Holocaust and of the various instances of genocide in the
20th century, reflection on ways to promote human rights, tolerance,
and inter-religious and intercultural dialogue. Copies of “Fateless”
by Nobel Prize winner Imre Kertész have been distributed to all
school libraries in Hungary. Since 1997, Hungarian educators, in
conjunction with the Hungarian Ministry of Education, have attended
seminars annually at Yad Vashem.
