Day of Remembrance:
The national Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration takes place on the
Sunday nearest to 27 January every year. In 2007, Holocaust Memorial
Day will take place on January 28.
Historical Background:
On the
morning of January 27, 1945, the Soviet Army entered Auschwitz III,
followed by Birkenau and Auschwitz I later that afternoon. Only some
7650 prisoners survived to be liberated. Over the course of WWII,
the Nazis murdered over one million Jews in the Auschwitz
concentration and extermination camps.
Educational Activities on Holocaust
Memorial Day: The
Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration will take place on Sunday 28
January 2007 at the Round Room at The Mansion House, Dawson Street,
Dublin 2. The event honors the memory of all of the victims of the
Holocaust — six million Jews as well as over five million other
victims, persecuted because of their nationality, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, disability, religious beliefs or political
affiliations. The inclusion of all of the victim groups is essential
to the commemoration, highlighting the importance of education about
anti-Semitism and all forms of intolerance.
The Holocaust Memorial Day
commemoration demonstrates the Irish Government’s commitment to the
Declaration of Stockholm, 2000, when the 44 signatory countries
undertook to commemorate and teach about the Holocaust every year.
The Holocaust Educational Trust of Ireland advises and assists
Government with organizing the annual Holocaust Memorial Day
