Day of Remembrance:
23 September, 27 January
Historical Background:
On 23 September 1943, the Nazis murdered the remaining Jews of the
Vilna Ghetto in the Ponary forest.
In 1994, 23 September was declared the National Memorial Day for the
Genocide of the Lithuanian Jews.
On the morning of 27 January, 1945, the Soviet Army entered
Auschwitz III, followed by Birkenau and Auschwitz I later that
afternoon. Altogether, they liberated some 7650 prisoners. The Nazis
murdered over one million Jews in the Auschwitz concentration and
extermination camps.

Educational Activities:
In following the UN decision, Lithuania has recently begun to
commemorate the 27th of January as Holocaust Memorial Day. The
following are the events that are being organized to commemorate
Holocaust Memorial Day:
January 25th: A performance "Love your near“ will be shown at
the Centre of Tolerance of The Vilnius Gaon Jewish Museum. It will
be performed by school pupils in English.
January 29th: The Vilnius Jewish community will open an
exhibition of the works of former Kaunas ghetto prisoner, David
Leibzon‘s. On the same day Marcel Worms (piano, Holland) and
Eleonore Pameijer‘s (flute, Holland) will perform a concert. The
pieces of music, composed by the Dutch Jews persecuted by the Nazis,
will be performed during the concert.
January 30th: A performance of “Telšiai is a hill of
presents“ will be shown in the Vilnius „Lėlės“ theatre. The
performance tells of the love story of a Jewish girl and Lithuanian
boy and their tragic fate during World War II. The performance is
based on actual events. The pupils of Telšiai town will perform.
During World War II prisoners of the Vilnius ghetto performed a play
in the premises of the Vilnius “Lėlės” theatre.
January 31st: The Vilnius Šalom Aleichem secondary school
(Jewish school) is organizing a meeting with the Holocaust survivors
at the Centre of Tolerance of the Vilnius Gaon. The event is for
Vilnius school students.
There are 43 Centers of Tolerance located in Lithuanian schools, all
established through the initiative of the International Commission
and the schools. Each of these centers commemorate the 27th of
January as International Holocaust Day.
