Slovak Republic

Day of Remembrance: 9 September

Historical Background:
On 9 September 1941, the fascist Slovak government approved the “Jewish Codex," containing 270 amendments, which defined Jews on racial grounds and required them to wear the yellow Jewish Badge. This was the last step before the deportation of Slovak Jews to concentration camps.

Educational Activities:
As in all commemorating countries, activities include commemoration of the Holocaust and of the various instances of genocide in the 20th century, reflection on ways to promote human rights, tolerance, and inter-religious and intercultural dialogue. The Slovak Ministry of Education has given the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava the task of organizing activities for the Day of Remembrance. Activities include discussions in schools, guided tours of sites of memory and the use of special teaching aids in classes.

Holocaust Education Seminars:
Yad Vashem is organizing a seminar in Bratislava, in cooperation with the Slovak ministry of Education and the Council of Europe, on January 20-22, 2006. A two-week seminar for 20 Slovak teachers will take place in March 2006.
