Day of Remembrance: 27 January

Historical Background:
On the morning of 27 January, 1945, the Soviet Army entered Auschwitz III, followed by Birkenau and Auschwitz I later that afternoon. Altogether, they liberated some 7650 prisoners. The Nazis murdered over one million Jews in the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camps.

Educational Activities:
January 27th was established as Holocaust Remembrance Day in Spain, and was commemorated for the first time in 2005.

Holocaust Education Seminars:
A team of Yad Vashem experts worked with a group of high school teachers in Madrid, Spain, November 7-16 2005.

Websites and Teaching Aids:
Cordoba, Spain hosted the June 2005 OSCE Conference on Anti-Semitism and on Other Forms of Intolerance. A report summarizing the conference and its findings, including measures taken by Spain to combat discrimination, can be viewed here.
