Welcome to the 13th issue of Teaching the Legacy. The focus of this issue is “Spiritual Resistance”, featuring an article on this theme and a lesson plan for teaching the subject. Also included are our regular updates on activities at the International School and within Yad Vashem, and book reviews. Main Article – “What We Value”The topic of resistance during the Holocaust signifies heroism in the face of evil. This article focuses on one type of resistance, that of spiritual resistance. Unarmed and confined in ghettos and concentration camps, we cover some examples of Jews fighting to maintain their humanity and dignity in addition to their physical selves. This article will acquaint you with the topic, and provide some ideas on how to teach the issue and its greater global theme in your classroom.
Lesson Plan
“Being Together Certainly Saved Me” – Interview with Hedi SolzbachThis lesson plan presents the topic of spiritual and cultural resistance for teaching high school students. By using resources provided on resistance through diaries, the camera, letters, poetry and more, the teacher can engage students in a meaningful and interesting discussion of the subject.

article, Rinat Magan-Ginovkar discusses the change that took place in the role of wives and mothers during the Holocaust, particularly in the Warsaw Ghetto. It is based on some of the interviews conducted by Cecilia Slepak for the “Oneg Shabbat” archive.

video and photo sections to the Sixth International Conference for Educators website. Featured are streaming, full-length videos of the opening and closing ceremonies and all speakers from the morning sessions, including world-renowned scholars in the fields of Holocaust history and education, institute directors and artists.

New Online Course: "Life Lessons - Bringing Holocaust History to Your Classroom"New Online Course: "Life Lessons - Bringing Holocaust History to Your Classroom"
This
online course provides educators with directives in Holocaust history in conjunction with pedagogic tools applicable to the classroom. Participants will gain excellent knowledge on historical aspects of the Holocaust from a multi-disciplinary approach, through use of primary and secondary sources. In keeping with the International School’s educational philosophy, the historical content will be explored through testimonies, diaries, artwork, literature and photographs, and applied towards classroom usage. The course presently is in progress and will be renewed in the coming months.

“At the Edge of the Abyss: The Holocaust of European Jewry”
The newest section of the online course
"At the Edge of the Abyss - The Holocaust of European Jewry," titled "Commemoration and Remembrance," focuses on commemoration within the Jewish and non-Jewish world, remembrance through art, and the shifting perceptions on the Holocaust and its implications since the end of World War II. The course began on June 2.
