Letters are of unique signficance, differing from other types of documentation, such as official documents, testimonies, diaries etc.. The letters relate what has already happened and what may loom in the future. Their words are often loaded with distress and the yearning for rescue.

A letter sent by Jews of Plock who had been expelled to Zarki, requesting help from their Landsman Association in Warsaw, March 2, 1941 Zarki, March 2, 1941. “I am writing this letter two days after arriving. I am in Zarki, Rodomsko district, 40 km from Czestochowa. I am here with my mother; we have no roof over our heads. We have no clothes or money. Please appeal to people from Plock to urgently help us in any way they can because we are dying of starvation and the cold. I plead for help!!!!! We were expelled on February 20th, and we were in the Dzialdowo camp for about six days. We arrived here on February 28th. We are in a miserable situation... Urgent help needed!!!!!“ .
