This picture is
taken from the "Auschwitz Album"
The two people indicated in the photograph were identified by Elly
Berkovits Gross as her mother and brother who were murdered in
Auschwitz in 1944.
On May 27, 1944, Irina
Berkovits, age 37, her daughter Elly, age 15, and son Adalbert, age 5,
were deported from Hungary. (Irina's husband, Eugen, had been taken
for forced labol in 1942. He never returned.) After traveling by train
for 7 days without food or water, Irina, Adalbert and Elly finally
arrived in Auschwitz. Elly was separated from her family during the
selection process. Elly's mother and brother were sent to the gas
chambers; Elly was selected for forced labor. She never saw her mother
and brother again.
In 1990, Elly Berkovits
Gross filled out these Pages of Testimony and submitted them to Yad
Vashem.
