“Girls of Paper”

“Girls of Paper”

Mr. Joseph Scheinfeld recently gave Yad Vashem this photograph of his nieces who were born in Hungary before the war. Following the German invasion of Hungary, the two girls were sent to Auschwitz and perished there.  The photograph was found by their father, Hananya Scheinfeld after the war.  On the back of the photograph (see below left), he wrote just two words in Hungarian - “girls of paper” - and the date, 23/9/1945.  Hananya Scheinfeld passed away, and there is no further information available about the sisters,  including their names.

The photograph and the faded words on the back, clearly written in a moment of pain and despair, are the only tangible memory we have of these two young girls, whose childhood was cut off in its prime.
