Permanent
residence for Jews was permitted in Baden-Baden in 1862. The Jewish
community grew rapidly. A splendid synagogue was completed in the late
1800’s. Most Jewish organizations in Germany had offices there.
Antisemitism intensified after WWI driving away Jewish vacationers who
would come to visit the local mineral springs. In 1937 health
facilities and public parks were closed to the Jews. Following the
events of Kristallnacht, many Jews left the city. Of these, 46 were
later trapped and deported, as were the 114 sent to the Gurs
concentration camp in southern France directly from the city in
October 1940.
