Beitar
Initials of “Brit
Yosef Trumpeldor” (Covenant of Joseph Trumpeldor). The youth movement of
the Revisionist Zionists. Established in 1923 by Zionist students in
Riga, Latvia, chaired by Zeev Jabotinski, the leader of the Revisionist
Zionists, head of Beitar and spiritual father of the freedom movement.
Beitar
stood for educating youth to support a national Jewish state on both
sides of the Jordan River, the ingathering of the exiles, and the
negation of the socialist ideal for the furtherment of liberal
principals. As such, an emphasis was also placed on the unity of
language, symbols and education. The movement also adopted a
semi-military style, with officers, parades, ranks and iron discipline.
Beitar continues to
operate today, in Israel and around the world. |
