Hashomer Hazair
The first Jewish youth movement in Poland,
established in 1916. A Socialist Zionist youth movement, similar to
those operating at the end of the 19th and beginning of the
20th century, which adopted the characteristics of the scouts
and an autonomous youth culture not directed by adults.
From the 1930s, the movement adopted a
Marxist-leftist outlook, and stood for the principal of equality. It
also compelled its members towards self-realization by emigrating to
Eretz Yisrael and living in a communal framework, completely
negating the continuation of Jewish existence in the Diaspora and
revolting against Jewish tradition.
Hashomer Hazair continues to operate in
Israel today.
