Jewish survivors of the death train from Iasi to Calarasi, Romania
During the first days of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, approximately 13,000 Jews were killed by Romanian army units, police, and gendarmerie in the town of Iasi and in two death trains. Between 2,430 and 2,590 Jews, guarded by Romanian and German troops, were deported to Calarasi. During the five-day journey more than 1,400 Jews perished from dehydration, beatings, and heat in the overcrowded cattle cars. The survivors of the death trains were set free after two months of camp detention in Calarasi and Podul Iloaei.
