President Bush Receives Replica of Biblical Illustrations from Yad
Vashem |
|
On January 11, 2008, US President George
W. Bush, on a brief 48-hour trip to Israel, made time for a visit of
almost two hours at Yad Vashem. Joining him were US Secretary of State
Condoleeza Rice, Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Israel President
Shimon Peres and Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council Joseph (Tommy)
Lapid. During his visit to Yad Vashem, the President, guided by Yad
Vashem Chairman of the Directorate Avner Shalev, visited the Holocaust
History Museum, the Museum of Holocaust Art, participated in a
wreath-laying ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance and visited the
Children’s Memorial. View the visit live
here. |
At the conclusion of his visit, Shalev
presented President Bush with a special gift, a replica of biblical
illustrations, the original of which is on display in the Museum of
Holocaust Art. Recently Yad Vashem, with the generous support of
Mikhail Bezelianski, decided to produce a special, numbered series
of this special portfolio, limited to 500 copies, the first of which
was presented to the President. Jewish artist Carol Deutsch created
the works while in hiding in Belgium. After he was informed upon, he
was deported and died in 1944 in Buchenwald, leaving behind 99 vividly
colored prints in an illustrated wooden box, which he bequeathed to
his daughter Ingrid. To find out about the unique gift President Bush
received from Yad Vashem and how to acquire your own copy,

Yad Vashem Launches Arabic
Website
On January 24, 2008, Yad Vashem
launched a new
website about the Holocaust in Arabic. The
website includes the historical
narrative of the Holocaust, concepts from the Holocaust, academic
articles, artifacts, maps, photos, archival documents and an online video
testimony resource center all translated into Arabic, as well as a special
multimedia presentation of the Auschwitz Album, with Arabic narration,
stories of Righteous Among the Nations- including Muslims from Turkey and
Albania- and the movie We Were There, which documents a joint visit of
Arabs and Jews to Auschwitz. The website was made possible through the
generous support of Stuart and Ilene Golvin of Toronto, Canada, children
of late Holocaust survivor Stanley Golvin, and may be accessed from

Shoah Victims’ Names
Recovery Project – International Efforts Continue
Yad Vashem’s Shoah Victims’ Names Recovery
Project invites you to make use of a variety of
new online resources
designed to enhance your outreach efforts.
Pages of Testimony Tutorial Video
We have created a 10-minute
video to demonstrate how to help survivors
and others from their generation to fill out Pages of Testimony and
memorialize Jews they know of who perished in the Holocaust. The video
presents a volunteer visiting with two women in their homes to assist
them in recalling and recording the names of Shoah victims on Pages of
Testimony. The video is ideal for screening at volunteer training
sessions or to provide tips and insight for individuals wishing to
embark on this project. |
